FOR ALL NORTH AMERICA, REVISED EDITION
Rick Hafele & Scott Roederer
JOHNSON BOOKS, November 1997
Warehouse Date: November 12, 1997
Subject Category: Angler's Entomology & Hatch Guides
Binding Type: Softcover
ISBN: 1-55566-161-0 |

|

In a user-friendly fashion, this book teaches how to collect insects,
identify them and choose fly patterns that match those of feeding trout.
Easy-to-use keys with excellent illustrations allow you to quickly
categorize what you find on the stream and match it with important
information on the habits, best imitations and other important details on
that individual insect. Illustrations by Richard Bunse. B/w & color
photos; 6x9 inches, 192 pgs.

An Angler’s Guide to Aquatic Insects and Their Imitations helps
you identify the insects that trout and other fish feed on in streams and
lakes across the country. This fully illustrated guide leads you step by
step through the identification process. Then, after you make an
identification, you’ll find a list of fly patterns that match the
natural, supplemented by information about the insect’s life cycle,
habitat preferences, and specific flyfishing tactics to help you imitate
its behavior.
The information in this book will help you solve the most basic flyfishing
problem—finding out what the fish are feeding on and being able to match
the insect and its behavior in the water. Best of all, no prior knowledge
of entomology is required to use this guide. All you need to start is an
aquarium net, a pair of tweezers, a few vials, the white lid off a pickle
jar, and a desire to become a more knowledgeable, more successful
flyfisher.

A fishermen's and ecologists' illustrated guide to aquatic insects.
Up-to-date, easy-to-use, this book provides a comparative treatment of
each of the orders and families of aquatic and semiaquatic insects in
North America. B/w illus, 16 color plates, charts; 8x11 inches, 480 pgs.

Aquatic Biology and Natural History are subjects of interests to many,
whether they be related to one's vocational education, one's avocation, or
purely to one's appreciation for the living order of the world. This book
has been written not only for entomologists, ecologists, and students of
aquatic entomology, but also for sport fishermen, naturalist, and
environmental assessment specialists. For those who may not have some
vested interested in nature and ecology, this book will provide a
pictorial introduction to some of the most fascinating life forms on earth
and, I hope, "wet" the appetite for understanding the aquatic
insects, their environment, and their relationship to human life.

Everything you need to know to match any mayfly you'll ever encounter.
Full color; 8.5x11 inches, 84 pgs.

Mayflies are the most important order of aquatic insects to those who fly
fish for trout. In order to fish their hatches successfully, it is
essential to understand their four important stages--nymphs, emergers,
duns, and spinners--and to carry and know when to use the best fly
patterns for each phase of this life cycle. Hughes has spent more than 30
years studying and photographing mayfly hatches, tying flies to match
them, and honing presentation techniuques to fish those ties. Now you can
benefit from his vast on-stream knowledge.

A new guide to understanding hatches across the United States by a noted
fly fishing authority. Meck's genius is to show the angler that the
understanding we need to catch fish is not the memorization of hundreds of
bugs and their Latin names. Meck identifies the broad patterns by which
hatches happen. Instead of memorizing all the individual insects, the
angler just needs to learn the timing of the patterns to these hatches.

Get the right fly for the right time of year in a favorable stream habitat
to enhance your ability to catch a trout. Here's the guide!
* Stream Habitat
* Recipes
* Emergence Dates
* Helpful Hints
* The Basic Michigan Fly Box
NOTES BY THE AUTHOR:
Being on the stream & catching a trout is great fun...but fooling a
trout on a fly you tied - or even created - can be a very staisfying &
rewarding experience.
If there is one thing that I have learned while doing research on this
project, it is that fly patterns for these Michigan hatches is a forum
open to debate! If I went to four different fly shops for a Hendrickson
pattern, chances are I would receive 4 different flies. From compara duns
to parachutes, to quill bodies or fur, mallard wings and synthetic wings
etc...etc... There are a LOT of patterns out there for the Hendrickson
alone.
They have been helping fly fishermen catch trout for years and will
continue doing so for a long time to come. Some are newer and others have
been enhanced by more up-to-date tying materials. All will help you on the
stream. Now, when you call your favorite fly shop and hear the "Brown
Drakes" are hatching, you can look up the hatch info. Also, now that
you have the basics like hook size, body color, wing color and one good
pattern to copy...experiment a little. Try a quill body instead of fur,
wrap on a synthetic wing instead of a mallard flank. Use some HI-VIS in
place of a tail and now you have a trailing shuck. Keep the size and color
similar to the original pattern and your options are open.
My hope is that this guide will aid you in selecting the proper Trout
Flies for the Michigan Emergence Schedule.

Thorough guide to identifying all the major caddis varieties east and west
of the Mississippi. Sections color-coded by species with successful
patterns. Full color; 4x7 inches, 144 pgs.

This easy-to-use streamside handbook is a succinct and thorough guide to
the identification of one of the most crucial and misunderstood
trout-stream insects—caddisflies—which in some parts of the country
are the most important food for trout. The book’s compact size and
sections color-coded by species allow portability and easy reference for
the angler of new or familiar streams. Large four-color photographs of all
the major species and detailed line drawings throughout aid in accurately
classifying the hatches of the East and West by larva, emerger, and adult
insect. Successful patterns and detailed information on the life cycle of
different caddis give the angler examples of what flies to fish and how to
fish them.

Dick Pobst lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and is the author of Trout
Stream Insects, another Orvis Streamside Guide, which Fly Rod &
Reel called “excellent work, as tiny and as valuable a book as you

This angler's study of the most important aquatic insects for trout waters
has a foreword by the late Gary LaFontaine. Illus, color plates &
B&W photos. 8x11 inches, 384 pgs.

This really is the new Bible on mayflies. It contains all the information
