Instruction sheet for the 1903 Springfield Scout #0370

Push the pin out at the rear of the flip up sight. Remove the spring by lifting up at the front and sliding it forward. Slide the flange nut into the under cut at the front of the sight where the spring was. Place the mount over the flange nut with the (2) 4-40 tapped holes toward the but end. Line the 4-40 tapped holes in the mount up with the holes in the side of the receiver. It is very important that these holes line up to keep from damaging the threads when the screws are installed. Put in the (2) 4-40 socket head screws. DO NOT TIGHTEN!! Place a pin drill etc. through the countersunk hole in the top of the mount and into the hole in the special nut. Move the nut around with the pin until the round part of the nut slips into the counter bore in the bottom of the mount. Put the 10 – 32 x ¾ flat head screw through the mount and into the nut. Tighten this screw and then the (2) 4-40 screws. You don’t need to get the (2) 4-40 screws very tight! Put the 10-32 x ½ set screws down through the tapped hole in the top of the mount and tighten against receiver.

DO NOT try to remove the (2) 4-40 screws without first loosening the 10-32 front set screw

Finally! A way to scope my 1903!

My 1903 came out of my grandpa's safe. He used to sporterize them back when it was socially acceptable to do so. Years later after he died I was able to get my hands on one of them, when any permanent modifications was blaspheme. I have been looking for a non-destructive/reversible method of getting a scope on this thing seeing as how the original sights are calibrated for powder loads from 1903, and the front sight is nigh invisible anyhow outside of ideal conditions. This little gadget allowed me to put a Vortex scout scope on too of it. I haven’t got it sighted in yet, but I’m excited to do so.

Great way to not hack up your rifle

I picked this up because I did not want to hack up my 1942 1903. One word of caution, you do need to push out the pin on the rear flip up sight. So I went on eBay I bought a busted up cheap sight to keep mine intact. Once I got past that, install was a breeze and now I have a scope on my rifle. This is a great way to add a scope to a 1903!!

1903 Scope base

It took me a minute to figure out the instructions. You have to remove the elevation portion of the rear sight to get this on. In my case I had to heat up the pin holding on with a torch due to the age. Then got it put on. I used a bore sight to get the scope close. I cannot get the height of the cross hairs perfect yet, I may need a shim. Shot a box of 20 shells and it was still on fairly tight. I did use blue loctite on the set screws. I might try a reddot on my next venture to the range. Finding a scope with *' eye relief is easier said than done. ** I had the sight base Cerakoted with my action as well.
