UltiMAK AK Scope Mount M2-B-- A rock-solid platform for your premium optics, shown at right installed on a Chinese rifle with original wood forend modified to fit the barrel clamps. Replacement forends are available here at UltiMAK, which need no internal modifications.
The M2-B has a Picatinny style rail positioned below the iron sight axis, making this the lowest optic mount available for the AK. With a tubular sight mounted low, you will be able to use your optic without a comb riser and still use your regular hold. The system allows for co witnessing (the ability to use your iron sights right through a 1x sight as a back-up sighting system) when used with a tubular reflex sight mounted low. This heavy duty mount replaces the original steel piston tube and upper handguard, so it adds less than one ounce to the weight of the rifle, making it by far the lightest optic mount installation in the world. The forward positioning of the optic gives you faster, easier and more natural targeting while maintaining your full field of view. Multiple target or moving target engagements, with both eyes open, become second nature.
The mount rarely if ever needs to be removed to clean the rifle, so you need not worry about loss of zero. Since the mount is clamped to the barrel and not jammed in between the gas block and the sight block like the original gas tube, several UltiMAK users have reported an improvement in their AKs' inherent accuracy.
* Please note; This is also the correct mount for the Century C39 and C39V2 rifles (it will NOT fit C39 pistols), and is also correct for the RAS-47, and will work with ANY OTHER standard weight AK having a standard ~7" piston tube.
Much confusion has resulted from not understanding the difference between the AKM style, plain piston tube and vented gas chamber and the older style, vented piston tube with plain gas chamber, and also by not understanding what it means to have a ~7" piston tube, or not knowing where the gas chamber ends and the piston tube begins. The tube must be removed before you can measure its overall length. Also, removing it will show you for certain where the gas chamber ends and the tube begins, and thus whether you have holes in the tube or holes in the gas chamber in front of the tube. If the tube has holes in it, order the M2-B. If it has no holes in it, and it's a standard length tube, and there are holes in the gas chamber, then get the M1-B or M2-B.
Nearly all AKs are vented to help dump exhaust gas out of the system up front once the piston exits the gas chamber (gas block)(although in reality most of the exhaust is passed around the piston and back into the rear sight block and receiver through the deep flutes in the piston tube bore). The issue at hand in choosing this mount is the location of the vents. Some very few AKs have no vents in either the tube or the gas chamber, and in that case simply order the mount that matches your AK's original configuration. IF YOU PREFER THE LOOKS OF THE VENTED TUBE (or you found a good deal on a used one with vents), YOU MAY USE THE M2-B IN ANY AK THAT IT WILL FIT. More vents behind the gas chamber vents will have no effect on the cycling of the action whatsoever. If your AK's original configuration has a vented tube AND a non-vented gas block, then we recommend getting the M2-B. It's that simple.
The UltiMAK Optics Mount has been engineered for compatibility with a wide range of AK rifle variations. If you have a 7.62 x 39 caliber AK with standard weight barrel and a standard length, removable gas tube (roughly seven inches, or 17.7 centimeters overall gas tube length) the Mount should fit nicely. We have yet to find a rifle of the above description that our mount does not fit, providing that the rifle is assembled reasonably straight. Some AKs have radically misaligned gas blocks as compared to the rear sight block. In rare cases, this can cause problems installing the UltiMAK Mount.
Also fits Romanian 5.45 x 39 and .223 (5.56 NATO) caliber AKs using barrel shims available from UltiMAK (Romanian 7.62 x 39 AKs usually sold as the SAR-1 or WASR-10 do not need the shims). Chinese AKs in 5.45 mm, 5.56 mm (.223) or 7.62 x 39 do not require shims. We have customers using our style 2 Mount (M2-B) on their Chinese "RPK"s (NHM-91). The Russian, RPK based VEPR II rifles in all calibers have a heavier barrel, like an RPK should, and all are equally compatible with our VEPR II Mount (M3-B). The M3-B is designed specifically for these heavy barrel AKs.
There have been large numbers of model M70 series AKs coming into the States lately. Having either a fixed stock or an underfolder, the model designations range from M70, M70B1 to M70AB2, etc. (all M70 series). The parts are made in Yugoslavia (now Serbia & Montenegro) by Zastava, though some U.S. dealers have apparently been saying they are from Romania or elsewhere. Charicterised by a bolt carrier in the white, a stamped receiver with side swells similar to an RPK, and often having a grenade sight on the gas block, the M70 AKs are different in some ways from other AKs, and are incompatible with many after-market AK accessories. The forend and gas tube are longer than standard, and the fixed buttstock attachment is unique. UltiMAK is building a new optic mount for these rifles, the model M9, and our ACR2-MC modular rail forend will fit them nicely.
All UltiMAK AK mounts are designed to be slightly shorter than the original gas tube. This helps in two significant ways. 1. It ensures a fit on practically any AK without custom fitting, which would require cutting through the hard anodizing-- a nasty process that will dull all but the best carbide tools. 2. More importantly, the shorter tube can be mounted so it does not press against the rear sight block or the gas block. In this way, the mount is not jammed against any part of the barrel assembly at either end, and the barrel can expand and contract with temperature changes without changing point of impact. Several customers have indicated an improvement in accuracy after installing UltiMAK mounts on their rifles.
There are some Hungarian, and possibly some Yugoslavian, AKs that for some reason have a gas tube that is more than an inch shorter than standard. There can be no mistaking this short tube with the standard length gas tubes, as it barely extends beyond the upper handguard. We now offer a mount specially engineered for these rifles-- the M7-B.
All of the old AK-47/49 style wood forends (with no side bulges) such as found today on most Chinese MAK-90s, have required some wood removal inside, to make room for the clamps. This procedure is covered in the illustrated installation instructions that come with your M1-B or M2-B Mount. Alternatively, you can purchase a compatible forend from UltiMAK or other AK parts supplier. See our Products page.
So far, any of the Bakelite or synthetic forends we have tried, including the "AK-100" series with steel heat shield, and the synthetic forends from Choate, will work nicely without modification, as will most AKM style wood forends having side bulges. If your experience differs from this, please drop us a line and let us know. We will be glad to hear from you.
There are some badly assembled rifles, and some rifles that are at the extremes of AK dimensions. If you cannot make your UltiMAK Optics Mount fit and function, you may return it to us (undamaged) and we will cheerfully refund your purchase price. Alternatively, trade your crooked AK in for a straighter one, and enjoy the benefits of UltiMAK.

Model SH1 (Sold Separately)
UltiMAK AK
Mount (M2-B) installed on a Romanian SAR-2 rifle with forend removed to show
shims. This shim set is NOT required for Chinese, Russian, Polish or Bulgarian
AK barrels in either 5.56 (.223) or 5.45 mm calibers, as they already have the
requisite .678" to .710" barrel diameter at the clamping position.
The Romanian small bore barrels need the shims to bring their outside diameter
of approximately .600" at the clamping position, up to the standard
diameter of approximately .700". Romanian AKs in 7.62 x 39 do NOT need the
shims.
